Welcome to Jay Nanda's Alamo True Metal, your home for the San Antonio heavy metal scene & surrounding areas.
Originally from Chicago and having earned my Bachelor's degree in Journalism and Mass Communications from the University of Iowa, I have been a music & sports journalist for 35 years. I report the news, interview musicians, and photograph and review concerts -- all of which you can find here.
I have been a beat writer covering the NFL, NBA, Major League Baseball and major college sports, as well as events such as the Super Bowl and Michael Jordan's comeback out of retirement in 1995. I worked on the Sports copy desk of the San Antonio Express-News from February 2005 to February 2015, which included editing stories and writing headlines for the 5-time NBA champion Spurs while contributing metal and WWE interviews to the entertainment sections. I supervised the sports section's night production team each week from June 1, 2009 to Feb. 9, 2015.
I was the only representative of the San Antonio media covering the first two 70000 Tons of Metal cruises in 2011 & 2012 and again for AXS.com in 2017.
Fun fact: I’m one of the 200 or so fans chanting “Manowar Kills” and “kick your ass” on the title track to Manowar’s “Kings of Metal” album that was recorded at the Thirsty Whale in 1987 in the Chicago suburb of River Grove, Illinois.
